Summary Statement:  Participation in the SCIENCE BOWL is a New Bridge S.T.E.A.M. initiative.  This is an afterschool team event. Science Bowl is an academic, competition event with team membership based on an application.  It is open to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders.  The team or teams formed work under the direction of Mrs. Baile and compete with other teams on a Friday and Saturday during the second semester.

One or two New Bridge Science Bowl teams are organized to learn about science, complete project tasks, and compete at the regional level (North and South Carolina).

Science Bowl is a high school and middle school academic competition, similar to Quiz Bowl, held in the United States.  Two teams of four students each compete to answer various science-related questions. In order to determine which student has the right to answer the question, a buzzer system is used, similar to those seen on popular television game shows such as Jeopardy!

History and Sponsorship:

The National Science Bowl (NSB) has been organized and sponsored by the United States Department of Energy since the competition's inception in 1991.  New Bridge first participated in the National Science Bowl in the 2012-13 school year.

  • September- announcements about Science Bowl begin
  • October- applications are available to students
  • November- New Bridge is notified about team status (whether or not we qualify for a team or teams)
  • Late January, February or March- Regional Competition

After notification (in November), the team or teams are formed and practice every other week.   The month prior to competition, the team or teams meet weekly.   The week prior to competition, the team or teams meet multiple times.

Subject Areas:

Physical Science, Life Science, Mathematics, Energy, General Science, and Earth and Space Science.

Other Competition Events:

In addition to the quiz bowl, students participate in the construction of vehicles for competition purposes.   During the 2013 competition, New Bridge won 1st place in the lithium battery powered car speed competition.
