Battle of the Books

Battle of the Books Main Page Image

Summary Statement: Battle of the Books is a competition based activity.  Students may compete at the local and regional levels against other middle school teams.  In order to participate, students must first try out.  Team membership is limited to 12 slots but is open to all grade levels.  Team practices are conducted after school hours.  Competitions are held during the school day.  Interested students should see Mrs. Sullivan.

Battle of the Books: Our Purpose

The purpose of the Battle of the Books program is to encourage reading by all students at the middle school level.  Our students are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints by prominent authors in the area of young adult literature.  The game format creates interest and excitement in reading.   Through the fun and excitement of the competition, students improve reading skills, mature in their choices of reading materials, and acquire a broader knowledge base.  Even during the height of the competition, students and coaches should remember that the goal is to READ, not necessarily to win!  (See past team pics below).

Battle of the Books Tryout and Team Policy Statement

Tryouts will be held in the autumn of each school year.  All students, grades sixth through eighth, may compete for a position on the team. Teams may have up to twelve members, but that is not a requirement.  The number selected is at the discretion of the Battle of the Books panel.  Team members will be chosen based on a written test, teacher recommendations, and approval by a team of teachers.  Team members may lose their positions if they have failing grades, behavior problems, attendance issues or are not keeping up with the reading and the work required by the Battle of the Books coach.  Cooperation and self-motivation will be crucial for success.

Non-Selection/Removal from BOB Team

The selection of team members is at the discretion of the Battle of the Books panel.  There is no appeals process for non-selection or removal from the team.
