New Bridge Middle School's Odyssey of the Mind team attended the State OM Competition on April 6, 2013. Having qualified at the regional level, the New Bridge team and 138 other teams competed in five problem categories at the state level event held at Minges Coliseum (Greenville, NC). Odyssey of the Mind is the premier problem solving competition of the world.
For several months the New Bridge Middle School team has worked under the supervision of Mrs. Anderson, 7th grade science teacher. The team selected the “Pet Project” and designed three vehicles with three different propulsion systems. The vehicles were designed to take parts of an “animal” to an assembly area. Once the “animal” was assembled, it had to perform a trick. New Bridge transported and constructed a flying armadillo. The three vehicles included a balloon car, a mousetrap car, and a Lego roll back racer. One of the vehicles, the Lego racer, was awarded the maximum points for having completed the assigned tasks without error.
The team place 4th at the State competition in the Division II (middle school) Problem 1 (Pet Project) group. The score is based on the following three criteria: (1) the team's solution/performance to the long-term problem, (2) the team's style, and (3) a spontaneous problem solving event. While New Bridge placed 4th overall, the team received the maximum number of points in "risk taking" for vehicle design and placed 3rd for the spontaneous portion of the competition.
Team members include: Celia Charles, Austin Daugherty, Anna Driscoll, Harrison Martin, Kiliejah Moore, and Anthony Roman.
Congratulations to this outstanding team.
