WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL LETTER
Posted On:
Thursday, August 11, 2016

Dear NBMS Parents and Students,

New Bridge Middle School staff members are making the preparations for the 2016-17 school year. For new and returning families, let me extend to you our thanks for trusting us to teach your children. We take this responsibility very seriously-they are our future! We continue to focus on our school-wide guidelines for success – “BEARS have PRIDE.” “BEARS” stands for Be prepared, Everyone shows respect, Attitude matters, Remember responsibilities and Safety first.

As we prepare for a new year, I would like to share some important information, reminders and dates:

Softball tryouts are on Monday, August 22nd and Tuesday, August 23rd. Softball tryouts will be held at the field on Kerr St. Football tryouts begin Monday, August 15th from 3:30-5:30 pm on the NBMS football field. Times for both sets of tryouts are 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm. Any interested 7th or 8th grade student MUST have a current physical and proof of insurance prior to trying out. Please wear appropriate attire. Check school website http://newbridge.nc.ocm.schoolinsites.com/ under SPORTS and select the sport for updates.

Our Open House will be held on Thursday, August 25th from 11:00 am - 1:30 pm or from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm. Come out during these times to meet the teachers and staff, pay fees, pick up schedules, get transportation information, and join the NBMS PTO. PTO will also host a “Gently Used” uniform sale. All paying fees, PTO, Bus information and other items will be located in the gym.

The first day of school for students is Monday, August 29th. This will be a regular length school day with the tardy bell sounding at 8:10 am and dismissal at 3:25 pm. Parents dropping students off to school may do so no earlier than 7:45 am. Students arriving early should report to the cafeteria.

To help with your back-to-school shopping, we have posted copies of the 2016-2017 Supply List on the NBMS website under Spotlight. I have also included it in this letter as an insert.

DRESS CODE

In addition to shopping locally, school uniform clothes are available online through a variety of retailers. Please note, not all “uniform” items from the retailers are approved for NBMS. Some potential sources are:

JC Penney - http://www.izoded.com. (Click on “shop uniforms”)

Target - http://www.target.com. (Click on “Kids,” and then go to the “School Uniform” section)

Sears - http://www.sears.com. (Click on “Clothing,” and then go to “School Uniforms”)

Wal-Mart - http://www.walmart.com. (Click on “Apparel,” and then go to “School Uniforms”)

The dress code is centered on students being able to place a high value on education, not their appearance. Style and status are not priorities at school. Students and parents are encouraged to find ways of enhancing the self-esteem and individuality beyond appearance. Please review the dress code with your child. Check the uniform information section (lower left side) on our website before making purchases. Also, please review regulations for shoes, jewelry, hair styles/colors and dress down dress code reminders.

HUB TRANSPORTATION

Onslow’s magnet schools utilize a hub bus system. Parents are responsible for transportation from home to the hub and vice versa. Students MUST have a new hub bus transportation form completed in order to ride the bus. Hub forms will be available at Open House. Listed below are the approximate arrival/departure times. Call 910-455-6489 if you have questions.

 BEFORE and AFTER SCHOOL CARE

Unless otherwise engaged in a school club or program, students can’t be on campus outside of the instructional hours. In order to assist our parents, we have partnered with the Jacksonville Recreation and Parks Department to offer before school and after school care programs. The program is offered Monday through Friday on regular student days (the program is closed on teacher workdays & holidays).

INITIATIVE UPDATE

New Bridge is proud of two major initiatives for the 2016-2017 school year:

1.   NBMS is an A+ School. Through A+, teachers plan lessons with arts integrated components and design instruction to meet a variety of learning styles. Using Gardner’s “Multiple Intelligences,” teachers are designing instructional tasks that connect to other academic disciplines and the various forms of art (drama, music, visual art, dance and creative writing).

2.   1:1 Laptop Initiative. All 6th, 7th and 8th graders will receive a Dell 3340 laptop for home and school

Use . Having a consistent device for all students allows us to expand digital learning opportunities. A small cost of $25 applies to students with a 1:1 device. Assignments and due dates will be posted in Edmodo.

 FINAL THOUGHTS

The New Bridge Faculty is very excited about 2016-17. If you have any questions or concerns as we get ready for the school year, please contact us. Enjoy the final weeks of summer, and we will see you at Open House on Thursday, August 25th!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Jane Dennis Principal NBMS
